                                                                              The Outsiders essay

In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the Greasers are known to be tough and mean. It is not the same for young Ponyboy Curtis, he is not mean or tough he is pretty much the opposite. He is a real nice kid he doesn’t really have it in him to hurt anyone. At one moment Two-Bit hands Ponyboy a broken bottle to fight off some socs but he doesn’t use it. Unlike his friends, Pony doesn’t like fighting he would rather watch sunsets.

The main difference between Ponyboy and his reputation as a Greaser is he was never in many fights, he didn’t like them. Take his brother Darry for example, he was a very muscular guy and he enjoyed fighting. Pony on the other hand isn’t very muscular and the only actual fight he was in he got hurt real bad. Even Johnny, the pet of the Greasers, can put up a decent fight he even killed a soc named Bob.

Another difference between Ponyboy and his reputation as a Greaser is he would rather see a movie than stir up trouble with his friends. Like Dallas Winston, the only thing he really does for fun is go steal something from a grocery store. Like in the book, when Johnny dies Dallas goes and steals a bunch of stuff from the local store.  Ponyboy never stole anything. He is just too nice for that kind of thing.

The other thing that separates Ponyboy from his friends is they have all been in a fight at one point or another. Like his brother Sodapop he fights for because he likes to test himself. Ponyboy fights because he has to, not because he wants to he is just too nice to get into fights. But that changed after Johnny died , he became heartless, and uncaring he was actually willing to fight a few socs when they came looking for him. He would have used his broken bottle but the socs ran off after they saw how serious he was.

I think the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton was a very good book I really wish she would have written a second book to it.  Compared to Dallas, Two-bit or his brother Darry Ponyboy doesn’t seem like he should be a Greaser he just can’t hurt any one he is better than that. I think if he were to get into another fight he wouldn’t fight back its just not his style, he is a peace loving kid who doesn’t deserve to live the way he does.

                                                                                 The Outsiders essay 2

Good literature, like The Outsiders, provides us with experiences which not only entertain and educate  us, but which can also get us to think about character. The three virtues of character I will be discussing are Responsibility, Courage, and Compassion.

The first virtue of character I will be discussing is Responsibility. I believe Darry fits that best because he is only 20 years old and he has to take care of his 2 younger brothers, Ponyboy and Sodapop. He does a very good job at it he makes sure Ponyboy does good in school and makes sure Sodapop gets to work on time. I think he is very responsible he works 2 jobs just to support his brothers. Even though he does a good job at taking care of them I think he is too young for that kind of responsibility.

My second virtue of character is Courage. I think Dallas Winston would fit that best because he isn’t afraid of anything. He steals all the time and he isn’t afraid to fight, even if he is outmatched. He even jumped into a burning building to save Johnny. He wasn’t even afraid of being shot when he held up the grocery store after Johnny died.

My third virtue of character is Compassion. I think Ponyboy fits that best he doesn’t like violence that much. He would rather see a movie or watch the sunset than get in a fight. He just doesn’t have what it takes to be a hateful person. He doesn’t fit in with the Greasers very well as far as I know he couldn’t fight to save his life. Like when him and Johnny were at the park some socs pulled up and tried to drown Pony he didn’t really fight back Johnny has to kill the soc that tried to drown him.

I would have to say The Outsiders is the best book I have read in school. Darry is very responsible, Dallas is very courageous, and Pony is very compassionate. I say my favorite character in the book is Darry, he reminds me of my older brother he is very caring and can be very responsible but if you mess with him you will get hurt.

This is another book I read at the beginning of the year with my teacher Aaron Garland, its called The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Its about a boy named Junior who switches from his school on the reservation to a rich, mostly white school.
